A Week of Service
Learning and Shared Hope: Reflections from the Dental Outreach Caravan from our staff
This week, we experienced something truly meaningful through the dental outreach caravan, made possible by the joint efforts of Indiana University, Santiago Partnership, Fundación Adelanto Comunitario Ecuatoriano (FACE), and the participating communities. More than just a service activity, it became a powerful example of what can happen when a network of support is built around a shared purpose.
The caravan reached communities such as Sangolquí, Chumillos, Santa Isabel, and Juan Montalvo, bringing not only dental care but also hope. Each person was treated with dignity and respect, recognizing that every community has its own needs, stories, and realities.
Throughout the week, one theme kept resurfacing: fear. Many people shared that they avoid the dentist because of painful past experiences. For others, the cost of treatment makes oral health feel like a luxury rather than a necessity. But in each community, something beautiful happened. Fear slowly gave way to trust. Every procedure was explained, every concern was heard, and little by little, a safe space was created where people felt seen and cared for.
One of the most memorable moments came from an elderly man who had only one tooth and two molars left. What could have been viewed as a routine case became a reminder of the value of every life. The doctors worked carefully to save his remaining teeth, giving him the chance to keep smiling. Moments like this reflect the heart of a team that doesn’t just provide care—they care for people.
Prevention was also a key part of the mission. The team visited schools to teach children about oral health and applied fluoride treatments to help prevent cavities. Planting these habits early is an investment in a healthier future for entire communities.
This experience also highlighted something essential: the work goes both ways. Communities generously shared what they had—habas, mellocos, potatoes, and corn—while the team shared their knowledge and skills. This simple exchange captured the true essence of shared responsibility and mutual respect.
Working together not only meets immediate needs but also builds a sustainable path forward. This week was a time of giving and receiving, of learning from one another, and of realizing that together we can transform lives and bring smiles to many faces.
